How this is worked out
- Deposits are made at the start of each financial year (by 5 April to earn the full year's interest) and interest is compounded yearly.
- Sukanya Samriddhi: deposits for 15 years; the account matures 21 years after opening and keeps earning interest in between.
- PPF: deposits for 15 years; matures after 15 years (it can be extended in 5-year blocks).
- Both use this quarter's rate for every year. The government resets rates each quarter, so the real result will differ.
Questions people ask
Are Sukanya Samriddhi and PPF tax-free?
Yes, both are EEE: deposits qualify under section 80C (old regime), and interest and maturity are tax-free.
Can I withdraw early?
Sukanya Samriddhi allows up to 50% for her education or marriage after she turns 18. PPF allows partial withdrawals from the seventh year and loans from the third.
Should I choose these over equity mutual funds?
They're safe and tax-free, but over 15–20 years equity funds have usually grown more. Many families use both: guaranteed schemes for safety, equity SIPs for growth.
What if I miss a year's deposit?
The account becomes inactive. You can revive it with a small penalty (₹50 a year) and the missed minimum deposits.
